ahmad minaoui is a visual artist based in the netherlands. working across painting, drawing, photography, and mixed media, the practice is driven by curiosity, recurring fascinations, and the persistent search for images that resist easy explanation.each series begins from a different point of interest. architecture, cities, colour, machinery, memory, historical references, popular culture, and everyday observations have all served as starting points. rather than following a single theme, the work evolves through periods of focused exploration, with each series examining a particular subject, image, or visual language on its own terms.what connects these bodies of work is a casual obsession with a scene—real or imagined.references are detached from their original context and reassembled through processes of observation, experimentation, and repetition. the resulting images often occupy an uncertain space between the familiar and the invented, inviting multiple readings rather than fixed interpretations.

an urge to copy

some images resist leaving. at a certain point, looking is no longer enough.

cities I haven't been to

some places are visited long before they are reached. they exist somewhere between observation and obsession.

buildings I haven't seen

not every building is made to be built. some exist only as exercises, questions, or possibilities. what matters is not whether these places could exist, but the presence they create.

brute

every image is a set of decisions. this series is about the intrusive decisions involved in making what could have been a normal render.

urban

this series is a record of a fascination with non-places in the city. these environments are not destinations, yet they possess a distinct, almost obsessive atmosphere.
